{"id":2329,"date":"2012-03-02T10:47:39","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T18:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orcutt.net\/weblog\/?p=2329"},"modified":"2012-05-20T13:22:57","modified_gmt":"2012-05-20T13:22:57","slug":"rewriting-the-rich-are-different","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/rewriting-the-rich-are-different\/","title":{"rendered":"Rewriting The Rich Are Different"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While in the post office the other day, a couple of postal workers who bought <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006FYKUMS\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=chrisorcutweb-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B006FYKUMS\" target=\"_blank\">A Real Piece of Work<\/a><\/em> complimented me on the writing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It reads so smoothly,&#8221; one of them said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems like it&#8217;s effortless for you,&#8221; said another.<\/p>\n<p>Then they asked what I was up to now. I told them, &#8220;Reworking the second book in the series so it reads like the first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, yesterday I finished a new revision of the novel\u2014<em>The Rich Are Different<\/em>\u2014and I was reminded of something Michael Crichton once said about his own struggles with revision. He said, &#8220;Books aren\u2019t written\u2014they\u2019re rewritten\u2026.It is one of the hardest things to accept, especially after the seventh rewrite hasn\u2019t quite done it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve lost count which rewrite of <em>The Rich Are Different<\/em> that I&#8217;m on, but I&#8217;m sure there will be 2\u20133 more before I&#8217;m through.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Long sigh.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While in the post office the other day, a couple of postal workers who bought A Real Piece of Work complimented me on the writing. &#8220;It reads so smoothly,&#8221; one of them said. &#8220;It seems like it&#8217;s effortless for you,&#8221; said another.
