My only com\u00adpa\u00adny where I live are the wood\u00adpeck\u00aders that gath\u00ader out at the suet feed\u00ader. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly they\u2019re not very good con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adists.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why, in recent months, I\u2019ve been hik\u00ading into the <a title=\"The Millbrook Diner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MillbrookDiner\" target=\"_blank\">Mill\u00adbrook Din\u00ader<\/a> every day.<\/p>\n<p>Often before I even get inside, Ken\u00adny, Ran\u00addi or Alex sees me com\u00ading from across the street, pours me a cup of cof\u00adfee, and places it with the cross\u00adword puz\u00adzle at my reg\u00adu\u00adlar seat. A small act that, more than any\u00adthing, makes this writer feel a lot less lone\u00adly.<\/p>\n<p>I always exchange hel\u00adlos with Thanasi\u2014the gra\u00adcious owner\u2014and some\u00adtimes I vis\u00adit with oth\u00ader regulars\u2014people whom I know only by first name, and with whom I inter\u00adact only at the din\u00ader. Reg\u00adu\u00adlars like Bill, who, at close to 80 years old, walks five miles with his wife every day. Or Wayne, a fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading, semi-retired man who flies planes and trains hors\u00ades. Best cof\u00adfee in the coun\u00adty.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I like to read in the din\u00ader, but most\u00adly&nbsp;I drink a lot of cof\u00adfee there, and I write. (Pop\u00adu\u00adlar def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of a writer: \u201ca device that con\u00adverts caf\u00adfeine into words.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I\u2019ve writ\u00adten and edit\u00aded thou\u00adsands of words in the Mill\u00adbrook Din\u00ader. Sto\u00adries. Jour\u00adnal entries. Exec\u00adu\u00adtive speech\u00ades. Video scripts. Plays. And the Dako\u00adta nov\u00adels (see ads to right). Most recent\u00adly was a 10-minute play for an upcom\u00ading <a title=\"The Half Moon Theatre 10-Minute Play Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/halfmoontheatre.org\/about\/hmt-writers-constellation\/\" target=\"_blank\">play fes\u00adti\u00adval<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What\u00adev\u00ader I\u2019ve been writ\u00ading, I\u2019ve found the mild noise of the din\u00ader to be <a title=\"Article at The Atlantic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2012\/06\/study-of-the-day-why-crowded-coffee-shops-fire-up-your-creativity\/258742\/\" target=\"_blank\">cre\u00adative\u00adly stim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading<\/a>. Also,&nbsp;the famil\u00adiar\u00adi\u00adty of the peo\u00adple and the sur\u00adround\u00adings gives me a sense of com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, of con\u00adnec\u00adtion, that I need so I don\u2019t feel so iso\u00adlat\u00aded.<\/p>\n<p>Who would have thought that a din\u00ader could do all that?<\/p>\n<p>The Mill\u00adbrook Din\u00ader is my sec\u00adond office, and I thank Thanasi, his wife, and his staff for always mak\u00ading me feel so wel\u00adcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Chris<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Writ\u00ading full-time is a lone\u00adly enter\u00adprise.
