Bluntly put, I need to get the hell away from all of humanity (to the extent that I can) for a month. I need to do this so I can see exactly how deeply I&#8217;m capable of writing when not subjected to the noise and vicissitudes of modern life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7397\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7397\" src=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1.jpg\" alt=\"art-of-peace-01-web1\" width=\"450\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1-500x317.jpg 500w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/art-of-peace-01-web1-430x273.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>I am halfway through my next book\u2014a personal and very difficult to write memoir\u2014and while the writing has been going relatively well, I need three weeks to a month of uninterrupted writing time.<\/p>\n<p>This, combined with a strict media diet (no commercial television, limited movies, limited music, nothing but a few great books and novels: <em>War and Peace<\/em>; <em>The Art of Peace<\/em>;\u00a0<em>A Farewell to Arms;\u00a0<\/em><em>Lolita<\/em>;\u00a0<em>First Love<\/em>), and an intense (Navy SEAL intense enough for you?) diet and exercise regimen, will enable me to finish the book.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life.&#8221; \u2014 Morihei Ueshiba,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Art of Peace<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My plan is to come down from\u00a0the Vermont mountains in a month with the completed first draft of a book, a tanner and buffer body, and a more peaceful mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/exterior-summer400.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7396\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7396\" src=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/exterior-summer400.jpg\" alt=\"exterior-summer400\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/exterior-summer400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/exterior-summer400-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Circumstances have aligned giving me the ability to do this. First, my best friend Jason Scott went to Japan, leaving me with his fine AWD automobile for the next month. Then, my other best friends Brian and Maia offered me the use of their vacation house\u00a0high in the Green Mountains\u2014with no visitors whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m bringing the current manuscript of the book, pencils, notebooks, my Macbook Air, my printer, my favorite typewriter (a Royal Quiet Deluxe), and a ream of paper, along with my camera and a video camera, because I plan on documenting what it is to go into seclusion to write in 2016\u2014to show myself writing, tanning, working out, cooking, reading, and in general doing all of the things a writer does when in solitude finishing\u00a0a book.<\/p>\n<p>I may or may not write about the experience when I return. Such an entry will probably take the form of a completed video about my sojourn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/typewriter-field1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7398\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7398 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/typewriter-field1.jpg\" alt=\"typewriter-field1\" width=\"499\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/typewriter-field1.jpg 499w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/typewriter-field1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orcutt.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/typewriter-field1-430x287.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a>This is something that I and just about all writers fantasize about doing: retreating into the wilds to do nothing but write. My sense is that there are very few of us with the self-discipline necessary to make the tenure a productive one. I&#8217;m confident that I&#8217;m one of these writers.
