Dur\u00ading the COVID-19 cri\u00adsis, in addi\u00adtion to writ\u00ading and revis\u00ading my mag\u00adnum opus, I\u2019ve been doing a lot of hik\u00ading and moun\u00adtain climb\u00ading. The oth\u00ader day, as I was leav\u00ading the house to hike a por\u00adtion of the Appalachi\u00adan Trail, I reached for my trusty hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wore the hat while climb\u00ading Mount Wash\u00ading\u00adton and oth\u00ader moun\u00adtains in my late teens and ear\u00adly 20s. I wore it cav\u00ading a cou\u00adple of times. I wore it dur\u00ading an epic 80s overnight road trip from New York to Chica\u00adgo. I wore it hik\u00ading through Glac\u00adi\u00ader Nation\u00adal Park and Yel\u00adlow\u00adstone. I wore it while fly fish\u00ading in New York, Ver\u00admont, Mon\u00adtana, Wyoming and Ida\u00adho. I wore it in the Grand Canyon, Zion Nation\u00adal Park, and Bryce Canyon. I wore it in the Adiron\u00addacks, the White Moun\u00adtains, the Green Moun\u00adtains, and the woods of Maine. I wore it while boat\u00ading on Great Sacan\u00adda\u00adga Lake and in the Penob\u00adscot Bay of Maine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve had a lot of adven\u00adtures with this hat, and it just occurred to me that it\u2019s over 30 years old. I got the thing when I was 17 or 18. Here are a few pho\u00adtos from some recent adven\u00adtures with the hat:
