Two decades of wak\u00ading up every day and writ\u00ading sto\u00adries, cre\u00adat\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters and worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOver the course of the past 20 years, upon learn\u00ading what I do, many peo\u00adple have com\u00adment\u00aded to me, \u201cMan\u2026you\u2019re livin\u2019 the dream!\u201d The most mem\u00ado\u00adrable time, the com\u00adment was made by a staff writer for the HBO series Hung<\/em>. We both had entries in a play fes\u00adti\u00adval and were explain\u00ading our back\u00adgrounds to each oth\u00ader. Very quick\u00adly I fig\u00adured out that this guy was over\u00adworked, unful\u00adfilled and stressed-out from hav\u00ading to crank out episodes of a TV show. Then, when I told him that I wrote exclu\u00adsive\u00adly my own fic\u00adtion and (at the time) did speech\u00adwrit\u00ading work occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly to sup\u00adple\u00adment my income, his face light\u00adened and he appeared to be visu\u00adal\u00adiz\u00ading \u201cthe dream\u201d for him\u00adself. When he came back to real\u00adi\u00adty, there was a lit\u00adtle envi\u00adous twitch in his brow, and then he said, \u201cMan, that\u2019s great. Good for you. I\u2019m glad one of us is livin\u2019 the dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou know what? I real\u00adly am<\/em> liv\u00ading the dream\u2014but it\u2019s my<\/em> dream. I\u2019ve known since I was 13 years old that this was what I want\u00aded to do with my life\u2014write fic\u00adtion, be a novelist\u2014and I get to do this work every day, and I\u2019m pro\u00adfound\u00adly grate\u00adful for it. But when non-writ\u00aders (or unful\u00adfilled screen\u00adwrit\u00aders, jour\u00adnal\u00adists, con\u00adtent writ\u00aders, ad men, etc.) have made that com\u00adment, they\u2019ve typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly focused only on the pleas\u00adant aspects of my work and they either haven\u2019t under\u00adstood, or they\u2019ve down\u00adplayed, the negatives\u2014chiefly, how much time and labor the work requires.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat they don\u2019t see or don\u2019t visu\u00adal\u00adize as a part of \u201cthe dream\u201d are the end\u00adless 12-hour days required to fin\u00adish a nov\u00adel. They also don\u2019t see the fact that nov\u00adel-writ\u00ading is an absolute time-sink (the oth\u00ader day, I glanced at the clock and it was noon; I wrote three para\u00adgraphs, looked up at the clock and it was three o\u2019clock; good\u00adbye to anoth\u00ader gor\u00adgeous Sat\u00adur\u00adday after\u00adnoon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because nov\u00adel-writ\u00ading is a soli\u00adtary activ\u00adi\u00adty where the writer spends a good 80% of his time alone, he doesn\u2019t have a lot of peo\u00adple (if any\u00adbody) with whom he can share his work or sim\u00adply make a con\u00adnec\u00adtion. And in order to cre\u00adate liv\u00ading, breath\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters, the nov\u00adel\u00adist must live not only his own per\u00adson\u00adal emo\u00adtion\u00adal life with all its ups and downs, but also the emo\u00adtion\u00adal lives of all of his char\u00adac\u00adters, and he also must put every\u00adthing that is in him into the work. In my case, on a dai\u00adly basis I\u2019m besieged by doubts and guilt and an over\u00adwhelm\u00ading sense of emo\u00adtion\u00adal angst (or tin\u00adni\u00adtus), usu\u00adal\u00adly not about things that I, Chris Orcutt, have con\u00adtem\u00adplat\u00aded or done, but because of things that my char\u00adac\u00adters have con\u00adtem\u00adplat\u00aded, done, and pos\u00adsi\u00adbly felt guilty about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This can lead to times when my emo\u00adtion\u00adal reserves (or \u201cthe well\u201d) are absolute\u00adly depleted\u2014something that has hap\u00adpened to me at least ten times over the past 20 years, and it hap\u00adpened to me again recent\u00adly, dur\u00ading lunch with my best friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
See\u00ading that I was dis\u00adtraught (I was con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading drink\u00ading for the first time in 3\u00bd years), he kind\u00adly sug\u00adgest\u00aded a dozen things he could do to help me. I tru\u00adly appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded his kind\u00adness, but I knew what I need\u00aded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I need\u00aded a break. I need\u00aded a vaca\u00adtion. I need\u00aded to roam and explore and get the hell away from my cast of 20+ self-absorbed teenage char\u00adac\u00adters. I need\u00aded to refill the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So that\u2019s exact\u00adly what I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019ve dis\u00adcov\u00adered that, for me, these break\u00addowns occur when there\u2019s an imbal\u00adance between out\u00adput and input. I have an emo\u00adtion\u00adal break\u00addown when I\u2019ve had noth\u00ading but out\u00adput<\/em> for a long time, and my well of images, feel\u00adings, and inspi\u00adra\u00adtion has drained down to dregs. When this hap\u00adpens, I have to get input<\/em> back into the sys\u00adtem: I have to see new and dif\u00adfer\u00adent peo\u00adple and places, stop writ\u00ading for out\u00adput for a while (instead just take casu\u00adal, ran\u00addom notes, a form of input), and sim\u00adply enjoy myself. In short, I have to go have adven\u00adtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI\u2019ve writ\u00adten exten\u00adsive\u00adly else\u00adwhere about some of my past mod\u00adest adven\u00adtures: in Paris and Nor\u00admandy, on a two-week dri\u00adving tour of Great Britain, in the wilds of Mon\u00adtana, etc. This time around, my well-refill\u00ading adven\u00adture was much more spon\u00adta\u00adneous, and bro\u00adken into three parts: a week on Flori\u00adda beach\u00ades and at Disney\u2019s Ani\u00admal King\u00addom, a week\u2019s \u201cstay\u00adca\u00adtion\u201d of see\u00ading friends and going to movies, and a few days in my new wilder\u00adness get\u00adaway location\u2014Adirondack Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe author in Fort Laud\u00aderdale, FL, ready to enjoy his hard-earned vaca\u00adtion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nI love to swim, so my wife booked us into a resort hotel in Fort Laud\u00aderdale, and I did noth\u00ading but work out, run on the beach, and swim in the ocean and the amaz\u00ading resort pool. Some\u00adthing about the pleas\u00adant monot\u00ado\u00adny of the ocean waves clears my head, and after an angry and dis\u00adturbed 24 hours of not know\u00ading what to do with myself, I became \u201cvaca\u00adtion Chris\u201d\u2014a guy who makes friends with the locals and fel\u00adlow vaca\u00adtion\u00aders. I con\u00adversed in Span\u00adish with the pool main\u00adte\u00adnance guy, Jorge, before the sun had come up. I per\u00adfect\u00aded mak\u00ading egg white veg\u00adetable omelets in our hotel room kitch\u00adenette. I threw a foot\u00adball around in the surf with a group of Aus\u00adtri\u00adan exchange stu\u00addents and explained the rules of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan foot\u00adball. I read a cou\u00adple pages (and only a cou\u00adple) of a non\u00adfic\u00adtion book I\u2019ve been savor\u00ading: Max Perkins, Edi\u00adtor of Genius<\/em>. In no time\u2014perhaps because the well had already begun to refill\u2014random ideas for my nov\u00adel-in-progress start\u00aded com\u00ading to me, and I wrote them in a \u201c007\u201d Mole\u00adsk\u00adine note\u00adbook I\u2019d brought. And I also got a pret\u00adty sweet tan.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe author at Clear\u00adwa\u00adter Beach, Flori\u00adda, May 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nAfter a dri\u00adve across the state through the Ever\u00adglades (dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00ading; we didn\u2019t see a sin\u00adgle alli\u00adga\u00adtor), my wife and I went to famed Clear\u00adwa\u00adter Beach on the Gulf Coast. There, I played boc\u00adce with a group of 20-some\u00adthing Amer\u00adi\u00adcan guys and swam a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, the next day, we went to Disney\u2019s Ani\u00admal King\u00addom, and I wore my safari jack\u00adet and a new hat I\u2019d picked up in Flori\u00adda. Con\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly, my safari out\u00adfit was bet\u00adter than that worn by the park employ\u00adees, and I was asked for direc\u00adtions (and com\u00adpli\u00adment\u00aded by staff about my out\u00adfit) at least a dozen times dur\u00ading the day. For the course of the day, in my mind I pre\u00adtend\u00aded to be a young ver\u00adsion of a char\u00adac\u00adter I cre\u00adat\u00aded in my sto\u00adry \u201cThe Last Great White Hunter\u201d\u2014Buck Rem\u00ading\u00adton. \u201cWhat kind of a man was he? More than a man\u2019s man, that\u2019s for sure. He was a man\u2019s man\u2019s man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe author, Chris Orcutt, as one of his own fic\u00adtion\u00adal char\u00adac\u00adters, Buck Rem\u00ading\u00adton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nAs a guy who nev\u00ader got to expe\u00adri\u00adence any of the Dis\u00adney parks as a kid, I was thor\u00adough\u00adly blown away by my visit\u2014most notably how the park oper\u00adat\u00aded like a Swiss watch: with total pre\u00adci\u00adsion. I had gone into the expe\u00adri\u00adence gird\u00ading my loins, expect\u00ading to have to wait for hours for cer\u00adtain rides and attrac\u00adtions, but I dis\u00adcov\u00adered that the rides are designed so that stand\u00ading in line is part of the expe\u00adri\u00adence, and so the half-hour that we had to wait was nev\u00ader a hard\u00adship.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe author as 7\u2011year-old Chris Orcutt, a kid who want\u00aded to be an explor\u00ader.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nWhen I was wait\u00ading in line for my sec\u00adond ride on the Mt. Ever\u00adest \u201cthrill ride,\u201d I perused pho\u00adtos on the wall of a 1982 expe\u00addi\u00adtion to For\u00adbid\u00adden Moun\u00adtain in the Himalayas to seek out the Yeti. Now, as some\u00adone who has read a cou\u00adple dozen books about Big\u00adfoot and the Yeti (or Abom\u00adinable Snow\u00adman), I was intrigued; I\u2019d nev\u00ader heard of this 1982 expe\u00addi\u00adtion, and some of the pho\u00adtos recov\u00adered from an expe\u00addi\u00adtion cam\u00adera seemed to show a Yeti. As the line to get on the ride moved for\u00adward, I had to stop read\u00ading the dis\u00adplay, but lat\u00ader on looked it up and learned it was 100% fictitious\u2014created entire\u00adly by the Dis\u00adney imag\u00adi\u00adneers. Wow. These men and women are good<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI loved every\u00adthing about Ani\u00admal King\u00addom, and when we got back from this vaca\u00adtion, I imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly bought 50 more shares of Dis\u00adney stock. While there, I real\u00adized some\u00adthing: Nobody does it like Dis\u00adney, and what\u00adev\u00ader they do in the future, I want to make sure I have a piece of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we got home again, I took some more time off, get\u00adting togeth\u00ader with friends, swim\u00adming, work\u00ading out, and going to the movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since I\u2019m work\u00ading on a nov\u00adel that takes place in 1986\u201387, the orig\u00adi\u00adnal Top Gun<\/em> makes an appear\u00adance in the nov\u00adel, so ever since I found out about the sequel, I\u2019ve been look\u00ading for\u00adward to the movie. Hon\u00adest\u00adly, though, I thought the pro\u00adduc\u00aders would screw it up, mak\u00ading some watered-down, polit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly cor\u00adrect movie, but they didn\u2019t. Clear\u00adly, they used the orig\u00adi\u00adnal movie as a tem\u00adplate, cre\u00adat\u00ading one of the best movies I\u2019ve seen in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat most pleased me about Top Gun: Mav\u00ader\u00adick<\/em> was that, unlike super\u00adhero movies made today, it wasn\u2019t made for the new gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion; it was made for my<\/em> generation\u2014those of us who saw the orig\u00adi\u00adnal movie in the the\u00adater half a dozen times dur\u00ading the sum\u00admer of \u201986. The mak\u00aders of Mav\u00ader\u00adick<\/em> used the same sto\u00adry struc\u00adture, and sim\u00adply aug\u00adment\u00aded and refined the orig\u00adi\u00adnal movie \u201cthrill ride\u201d with mod\u00adern spe\u00adcial effects, a videogame com\u00adpo\u00adnent, and a char\u00adac\u00adter (a few years old\u00ader than me) who is now at the end of his career. All I can say is, my first words to my wife (dur\u00ading the movie) were, \u201cI want the Blu-Ray of this movie for Christ\u00admas.\u201d (A week after see\u00ading Mav\u00ader\u00adick<\/em> in the the\u00adater the first time, I went back and saw it a sec\u00adond time\u2014it\u2019s that good.)<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy most recent adven\u00adture in refill\u00ading the well was even more spon\u00adta\u00adneous than the Flori\u00adda trip. For months, I\u2019d been cast\u00ading about for ideas on where to go in order to refill the well, and then I real\u00adized that a few impor\u00adtant scenes in my epic nov\u00adel take place in the Adiron\u00addacks in New York State, and in Burling\u00adton on Lake Cham\u00adplain in Ver\u00admont. Back in my teens and ear\u00adly 20s, I spent a lot of time up there with Boy Scouts and vis\u00adit\u00ading a friend\u2019s house on one of the lakes, but with the excep\u00adtion of vis\u00adit\u00ading Lake Placid every cou\u00adple of years for XC-ski\u00ading, I hadn\u2019t real\u00adly explored up there in near\u00adly 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe author, dan\u00adger\u00adous\u00adly tak\u00ading a self\u00adie at 64 mph (while rockin\u2019 his Van Halen T\u2011shirt).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>Scenes of lakes and rivers inside Adiron\u00addack Park.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nSo, for four days I wend\u00aded my way around Adiron\u00addack Park, vis\u00adit\u00ading about a dozen lakes (hey, Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia: by the way, New York has all <\/em>the water), ham\u00adlets sur\u00adround\u00aded by moun\u00adtains, and loca\u00adtions that appear in the nov\u00adel. I used the trip in part to relax, and in part to remind myself of sev\u00ader\u00adal facts about these areas for the nov\u00adel. Among the many things I was remind\u00aded of, fol\u00adlow\u00ading are a few truths I relearned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n1. The water in these lakes is extreme\u00adly cold, even in mid-June. (In my late teens and ear\u00adly 20\u2019s, I did a lot of water\u00adski\u00ading with a friend whose fam\u00adi\u00adly had a house on one of the lakes up there, but I\u2019d for\u00adgot\u00adten since then just how cold the waters are.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. The deer flies and black\u00adflies are super<\/em>-friend\u00adly up there, gath\u00ader\u00ading excit\u00aded\u00adly around your car to greet you before you\u2019ve even had a chance to park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n3. Adiron\u00addack Park is VAST<\/em>\u2014noth\u00ading but 6\u2011million acres of moun\u00adtains, lakes, rivers, bogs, ravines and true, dense, pri\u00admor\u00addial wilder\u00adness. When seen in satel\u00adlite view, the few roads and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties con\u00adtained with\u00adin the con\u00adfines of the park look like gos\u00adsamer-thin spi\u00adder webs com\u00adpared to the over\u00adwhelm\u00ading green of the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFour of the Adiron\u00addack Park \u201cGreat Camps.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nWhile up there, I swam in sev\u00ader\u00adal lakes, vis\u00adit\u00aded a cou\u00adple of the \u201cgreat camps\u201d (fam\u00adi\u00adly \u201cget\u00adaway\u201d lodges once owned by promi\u00adnent indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adists like Van\u00adder\u00adbilt, Rock\u00ade\u00adfeller and Durant), and in gen\u00ader\u00adal sim\u00adply began \u201cdreams\u00adketch\u00ading\u201d (my term) the out\u00adline for the last episode of the nov\u00adel. The cli\u00admax of the final episode and mil\u00adlion-word series takes place in the Adiron\u00addacks, so I want it to be riv\u00adet\u00ading and accu\u00adrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dri\u00adving around an area puts me into some\u00adthing of a med\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtive trance, allow\u00ading \u201cdreams\u00adketch\u00ading\u201d of the nov\u00adel to hap\u00adpen spon\u00adta\u00adneous\u00adly. (I have engaged in this activ\u00adi\u00adty for every nov\u00adel I\u2019ve written\u2014most notably dur\u00ading a two-week dri\u00adving and hik\u00ading tour of Mon\u00adtana and Yel\u00adlow\u00adstone Nation\u00adal Park that formed the basis for the sec\u00adond half of my Dako\u00adta mys\u00adtery The Rich Are Dif\u00adfer\u00adent<\/em>.) In this case, I drove hun\u00addreds of miles through Adiron\u00addack Park while lis\u00adten\u00ading to music that con\u00adjures scenes from the nov\u00adel, and as the music washed over me, and these amaz\u00ading images of the wilder\u00adness up there washed over me (steep and tow\u00ader\u00ading moun\u00adtain\u00adsides; deep, shad\u00adowy ravines; rush\u00ading rivers; deep blue lakes; and impen\u00ade\u00adtra\u00adble, dense, dark woods), the scenes played out for me in my mind, and I would pull the car over occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly and make notes in the \u201c007\u201d Mole\u00adsk\u00adine note\u00adbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\nChef Dar\u00adryl\u2019s Moun\u00adtain Din\u00ader in Blue Moun\u00adtain Lake, NY.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nAs a side\u00adbar, I have to men\u00adtion that I had the best break\u00adfast of my life at a charm\u00ading lit\u00adtle din\u00ader in Blue Moun\u00adtain Lake, NY: Chef Dar\u00adryl\u2019s Moun\u00adtain Din\u00ader<\/a>. This place is tru\u00adly a culi\u00adnary oasis in a vast and for\u00adbid\u00adding wilder\u00adness (Adiron\u00addack Park). Chef Dar\u00adryl him\u00adself greet\u00aded me when I walked in, and he made my scram\u00adbled eggs exact\u00adly how I like them\u2014\u201cfluffy.\u201d My break\u00adfast there was SO good that I went back a few hours lat\u00ader and bought lunch to go. I also bought a Chef Dar\u00adryl\u2019s Moun\u00adtain Din\u00ader \u201cregular\u2019s\u201d mug and wrote my name on the bot\u00adtom (\u201cChris Orcutt, Nov\u00adel\u00adist\u201d), so the next time I go back, I\u2019ll only have to pay $1.00 for my coffee\u2014with unlim\u00adit\u00aded refills. Thanks, Dar\u00adryl! The food there was so good, the next day when I want\u00aded break\u00adfast, even though the din\u00ader was 40-some-odd miles away, I seri\u00adous\u00adly con\u00adsid\u00adered back\u00adtrack\u00ading an hour for Darryl\u2019s mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent cook\u00ading.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI\u2019m not going to write about find\u00ading the train depot in the Adiron\u00addacks where Theodore Roo\u00adsevelt learned he had become pres\u00adi\u00addent after William McKinley\u2019s assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion; nor about my adven\u00adture hik\u00ading around Sag\u00adamore Lake and bor\u00adrow\u00ading somebody\u2019s canoe; nor about my fly fish\u00ading adven\u00adture on the west branch of the Aus\u00adable Riv\u00ader; nor about my after\u00adnoon hang\u00ading out with the attrac\u00adtive male and female life\u00adguards on Lake Cham\u00adplain (a group of teens and 20-some\u00adthings whom I dubbed Bay\u00adwatch: Burling\u00adton North Beach<\/em>); nor about my quest to find the loca\u00adtion of a 1976 big\u00adfoot sight\u00ading out\u00adside of White\u00adhall, NY. I\u2019m sor\u00adry, but those are just for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNow, though, as I head into the home\u00adstretch with my behe\u00admoth epic nov\u00adel, I\u2019m deter\u00admined to pace myself with this final episode. I real\u00adize that I need to take reg\u00adu\u00adlar breaks to refill the well, so I don\u2019t have the kind of break\u00addown I had this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This August I will take a cou\u00adple days to \u201cdo\u201d Saratoga\u2014hanging out with the train\u00aders and hand\u00adi\u00adcap\u00adpers by the fence rails watch\u00ading the ear\u00adly-morn\u00ading work\u00adouts, bet\u00adting on the races dur\u00ading the day, and swim\u00adming and work\u00ading out and play\u00ading bil\u00adliards in the evenings. This fall I will take anoth\u00ader trip to the Adiron\u00addacks, and said trip will include some more fly fish\u00ading. Ear\u00adly this win\u00adter (prob\u00ada\u00adbly in Decem\u00adber), I\u2019m trav\u00adel\u00ading alone to Lake Placid, NY and get\u00adting exten\u00adsive lessons in skat\u00ading style cross-coun\u00adtry ski\u00ading from a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal at the Mount Van Hoeven\u00adberg Olympic train\u00ading facil\u00adi\u00adty. And next March, Alexas and I will return to Flori\u00adda for at least a week of sun and beach\u00ades, and to vis\u00adit Disney\u2019s Epcot or Hol\u00adly\u00adwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yup\u2026I sup\u00adpose that writer for Hung<\/em> was right: I am<\/em> livin\u2019 the dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBut now I real\u00adize that livin<\/em>\u2019 the d<\/em>ream<\/em> encom\u00adpass\u00ades more than the end\u00adless work of try\u00ading to cre\u00adate nov\u00adels that will stand the test of time; livin\u2019 the dream also means roam\u00ading and explor\u00ading and refill\u00ading the cre\u00adative well\u2014without hav\u00ading to answer to any\u00adbody<\/em> along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThese breaks are an inte\u00adgral part of the dream, and from now on I\u2019m going to make sure I take them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
